On April 27th, Christ Church begins a new sermon series entitled, “He Said What?!?!: Hearing What Jesus Said, Understanding Why He Said It”. So much of what we discuss of Jesus’ teachings are the ‘easier passages’ whereby we hear Jesus say the ‘heart warming’ words of grace and love.
But, what about the other words of Jesus? What about the tough words that push at our comfort levels? What about when Jesus openly challenges what ‘we want to hear’ with words that are just plain tough to hear?
This sermon series looks at five such encounters with Jesus—conversations that clearly are from Jesus but don’t sound like what we expect from the Christ. And, yet, these conversations possess some of Jesus’ most powerful and important teachings about such topics as priorities, commitment, sacrifice, forgiveness, and the poor.
You will not walk away from these encounters the same—clearly, from Jesus’ words and tone, we are not supposed to…
We begin this Sunday with Luke 14: 25-35 where Jesus says ‘unless a person hates their mother and father… even their own life… they cannot inherit the Kingdom of God’. Wow! That is a tough one. Take it from someone who ‘loves his mama!’—that one pushes at me! But, what did Jesus really mean? Did the context change anything about what we heard? Was their something deeper happening in this passage?
Join us this weekend at our Saturday (5pm), Sunday (8:30, 9:45 or 11am), or Online Campus (Sun 9:45am) services to not only ‘hear what Jesus said, but understand why he said it’.
